Calpe Rock – the must see feature of Calpe
Almost wherever you are in Calpe you can see Calpe Rock and it would be a shame not to spend a little time attempting the walk that ascends it. The ‘walk’ becomes somewhat of a climb in places and is not for the faint-hearted but it is within most peoples abilities, and people of all ages, from children to pensioners, can enjoy far-reaching views of the Costa Blanca after making it to the top.

Yesterday evening my girlfriend and I made a quick trip down the road to Texas – the bar that is! Bar Texas (or is it Texas Bar? – I’m not quite sure) is situated close to the Consum supermarket in Avenida Rosa de los Vientos, Calpe. We hadn’t been to the Bar Texas for a long time so decided to ‘saddle up and ride’ towards the sounds emanating from the bar that takes its name from the Lone Star State.

I have lived in Calpe for a while but I have only been to the La Lonja de Calpe – Calpe Fish Market – once before. That time it was on the way back from walking up to the top of Calpe Rock and my companions and I were quite weary but the noise and sights of the Calpe fish market did revitalise us somewhat!

Today it is the 6th of December and as an expat living in Calpe on the Costa Blanca of Spain I realised that I knew nothing about this Bank Holiday that is very important to the Spanish people. After doing a little research I found out more about el Día de la Constitución Española and I thought that I would write it here on Calpe is My Home for other English speaking people living in Spain to read. I feel that it’s important to know about the country in which we have chosen to reside.

Calpe has two main beaches either side of the Peñón de Ifach (Calpe Rock). On the east side of Calpe Rock we find the Playa Levante or La Fossa Beach. This 950 metre stretch of Calpe beach is backed by many tempting restaurants, ice cream parlours and interesting shops. In the summer the Fossa beach turns into a late-night large-screen cinema which is completely free of charge for everyone.

On the 6th of December I wrote a short article telling readers that as an expat living in Calpe on the Costa Blanca of Spain I knew nothing about Constitution Day in Spain. Two days later and here I am again to give you a little information about the Feast of the Immaculate Conception which is another national holiday here in Spain.

One of the more common walks we do with our dog is the coastal path walk to Les Basetes from Cala Calalga, the small cove at the end of Avenida Rosa de los Vientos. It is an easy and rewarding walk with a few gentle slopes and a continuously lovely view of Calpe Rock and the sea. With our dog this round-trip can be finished in about 40 minutes but I recommend that you take your time and enjoy the views. Even better is to stop at Les Basetes for a drink and snack before making your way back!

I was recently at a restaurant one evening when I overheard a loud conversation at the next table. The woman sat there was talking to a man who she had just met and she loudly proclaimed “I’ve lived here forty years but now I’m seriously considering moving back to England. I can’t stand Calpe anymore. It’s become a concrete jungle”. I nearly choked on my ice cream!

The Morí de Morelló construction is a typical flour windmill of the region of the Marina Alta dating from the 19th century. It can been found at the westernmost point of the archeological site known as Baños de la Reina. Surrounded by modern buildings, the Morí de Morelló stands proud, staring out to sea like an ancient mariner surveying the deep blue Mediterranean waters.

Yesterday evening I was fortunate enough catch a glimpse of early 20th century Russia. Through the magic of theatre I was transported to Anatevka to see and hear the story of the “Fiddler on the Roof” recreated superbly by a very talented group of individuals living in Spain. Footlights of Calpe is their name and this show is one that has to be seen and enjoyed when they come to Calpe on the 21 & 22 of November 2011.

Last Saturday night (26/11/11) I had the opportunity to see the latest show by Spanish Ballet Fusion named ‘Miradas’ – and what a stunning show it was!
I was very keen to see the show at the Casa de Cultura of Calpe and as I hadn’t previously booked my tickets I made my way to the box office two hours early to purchase a couple of seats. The box office sales woman was very enthusiastic about the show and promised me that we would enjoy the performance. She wasn’t wrong at all.

Last night after attending a pub quiz in the center of Calpe my friends and I drove to the BeniAsia Chinese Restaurant in Calpe which is located near the port and Lonja. With me was Nicki, my girlfriend, and Simon, a friend of ours who was visiting us from the UK. Although we didn’t arrive until gone 10pm there were still a few diners there and the kitchen doesn’t close until 11pm so we were invited to sit at a table near the large and attractive fish tank.

I was recently invited to a meal at the Oceanic Restaurant on the seafront off the Arenal-Bol beach. I have to say I was a little apprehensive as I had eaten a meal there about three years ago and was very disappointed with both the service and quality of the food on that occasion but was assured it had changed hands since then.

Just over eleven years ago the Calpe Christian Fellowship Church was formed by a group of Christians to meet the needs of the ex-pat community here in Calpe. They had come from a variety of Christian traditions, Anglican, Methodist, Baptist, Pentecostal, House Church and others but with a simple desire to worship together. From those early beginnings and meeting in various rented places the Church, now registered with the Spanish authorities as an authorised centre of worship, has its own premises in the Perlamar centre in the heart of Calpe.

I, like many other people on the Costa Blanca, have a pet that I love and as such it’s important to me to have a veterinary clinic near to me that I can trust.
